Ashton Commodities Limited is a London trading operation which focuses on and provides Islamic banks and financial institutions with Sharia'a compliant commodity solutions for the management of Islamic treasury liquidity. The Directors have extensive individual contact with the LME, Banking and Commodity trading fraternity for over fifteen years and thus has the requisite background understanding of commodity trade transactions and the respective administrative and documentary processes that ensue.
By way of background, Ashton Commodities Limited's main sponsor, Ashton Investments Limited ("AIL") a commodities consultancy group, was formed in 1997 to provide consulting services for global commodity businesses particularly in the LME base metals, Cotton, Oil and Power commodity sectors. Its team has a combined skill set adept at handling commodity trading structures and developed a significant business expertise in financing and mitigating various principle risks in the above sectors. In 1999 it facilitated a multi-million US Dollar, Murabaha structured trade finance facility with its client, a Fortune 500, European corporation. This Sharia'a compliant facility provided working capital for the raw materials used in a metal manufacturer in Central Asia. It was a logical extension, to transfer this expertise to establish Ashton Commodities Limited early in 2005 with its direct focus on the Islamic Banking brokerage sector.
Ashton Commodities Limited is working with its current wide client base of Islamic institutions in GCC, MENA and South East Asia, to satisfy their treasury liquidity management needs, utilising Sharia'a acceptable commodity solutions. These involve short term Murabaha transactions, medium term commodity trade flows as well as longer term commodity project business utilizing Mudarabah, Musharakah, Ijara, Istisna, Ashton Commodities Limited's role as pivotal in assisting the development of the secondary Sukuk market as well as establishing Islamic Commodity Funds.
Ashton Commodities Limited is also partnering an FSA regulated Carbon Asset Fund to focus on the origination of Carbon Credit Assets through projects under the Kyoto Protocol. Whilst Ashton looks at such projects world-wide, it is working with key Islamic institutions to identify specific projects in the GCC, MENA and S.E. Asia regions bringing British expertise and Islamic banking structures into the validation, contracting and running of such projects.
